| the belvedere - historic billericay |
| There has been a centre of commerce, trade and family living in Billericay since Roman times. Evidence in the form of ancient burial mounds suggests occupation of some sort since an even earlier time, going back to the bronze age. When the Romans invaded, the local tribe, the Trinovantes joined with Boadicea to try and repel the invaders. History shows that this was in vain, and after the conquest, a Roman encampment was established close to the current site of Billericay High Street. When the Romans were recalled in AD 410, the area was taken over by the Saxons. Unlike the Romans, they chose to make their main settlement at Great Burstead, then known as ’Burgestede’, a Saxon word meaning fortified place. Prior to the Norman Conquest, Little Burstead was part of the estates of the Earl of Godwin, King Harold’s father. The first mention of the name Bilyryca (there were several spellings) dates back to 1291. At this time, Great Burstead was still the more important place and still home to the parish church. Over the next hundred or so years, the emphasis moved to Billericay, with the chapel being established there in 1342 as bad weather was preventing the people of Billericay from getting to the church in Great Burstead. The church of St Mary Magdalene still has many of the original bricks from this building. in 1381, men from Billericay joined Watt Tyler in the Peasants™ Revolt, which was raised against unfair taxes but eventually brought down through treacherous double dealing and murder. About this time, local inhabitants fell under the spell of the Wycliffe preachers, and got the new religion bug so badly that a number were burned at the stake. Harsh conditions forced many to look to other shores for their survival and five from Billericay joined the original Mayflower sailing to the New World. Of these four are known to have perished in bad weather, but others followed and eventually, the town of Billerica, Massechusets was founded in 1655. The relationship between the two towns continues to this day. Many of the fine Georgian houses built in Billericay still stand, and much can be seen that dates back to this time. The town continued to grow in size and stature, being given a big boost with the coming of the railway when the town was linked to Southend and London in 1889. The first world war saw a famous battle over Billericay, when one of the first Zeppelins on a bombing raid was shot down over the town. Then in a really touching gesture during WW2, a group of schoolchildren from Billerica sent their collected pocket money of $39 to help the town’s Spitfire fund. For more information, why not visit the Cater museum in Billericay High Street. The main source of information used on this page is The History of Billericay website, an excellent resource featuring a historical walk in pictures through Billericay. |
